Language Switching with Voice Agents
I asked our voice agent to switch to French mid-call. It did, fluently, in exactly the same accent it uses in English. Which is roughly how my own French sounds.
That small moment points at a real problem in customer support. A caller rings, nobody on shift speaks their language, and they wait. Or they struggle through in English and leave the call less happy than when they started.
The question is: when a voice agent hears a language other than the one it started in, what should it do?
I tried two approaches in this video.
One persona, many languages
The same agent switches language and keeps its voice and accent. You get persistence of persona: the caller is still talking to the same assistant. The cost is that it can sound like a foreigner speaking your language. Fine for some products. Less fine when the caller is already frustrated and wants to feel understood.
Hand off between voices
The agent detects the language and uses a transfer tool to hand the call to an agent built for it: a different voice and accent, with its own prompt. In my test I switched to Spanish and was handed over almost immediately. I then asked to go back to English and it did. The conversation history goes with the call.
My default for customer support is the handoff. There’s a small delay while the model works out which language it’s hearing. Callers who mix two languages in one sentence, or use closely related languages and dialects, are where I’d expect detection to wobble.
You don’t need Dialt for either approach. Any voice platform with tool calling can do the transfer. What we’ve focused on is making the detection and handover fast enough that the caller barely notices it. The language handoff recipe shows the tool and the two setups.
For a customer service leader, the interesting part is that the wait for “someone who speaks my language” could shrink to near zero for routine calls, without hiring for every language you serve.
